In addition to weddings, the Folios invitations can also be used for other formal occasions, such as retirement parties, anniversaries, etc. Maria Thomas uses antique 19th century pens and hand-made walnut inks to create her Spencerianesque calligraphy, but with a playful 21st century style all her own. Thomas is known for her distinctive calligraphic art, in which thick pen strokes play off thin lines and delicate shading.

With Folios, Checkerboard has also taken die-cutting to a new level of sophistication. Each of the Folios invitations and envelopes are intricately die-cut to create soft edges and unique designs that compliment Thomas' artwork.
