The Census Bureau reports the medium age in 2006 for first marriages has increased to 25.5 years old for women and 27.5 years old for men, up from 20.8 years and 23.2 respectively, in 1970. This means couples don't need four more white bathroom towels, another set of pots or twelve more dinner plates.
Instead, some couples are straying from tradition, instead asking friends and family to help with their honeymoon, furnishing, homebuilding, or charities.
Who needs three new coffee pots when the money would be better spent helping to send them on an exotic honeymoon to Atlantic Hotel, Paradise Island, Bahamas or setting them up with a romantic meal at the trendy Nobu restaurant?
With the average honeymoon costing $4,778, according to the Real Wedding Survey 2007 by The Knot wedding network, it's no surprise couples are turning to non-traditional means. The Knot's survey conducted in 2006 of 22,000 respondents also finds the average wedding costs $27,882, excluding the honeymoon and engagement ring.
While some might find it inappropriate to send the couple on a trip as opposed to starting a home, honeymoon registries are really no different than gift cards. Either way, you're placing a value on the gift.
With honeymoon registries, travel agencies send out personalized gift cards informing guests of the registry. Guests contribute money, which is then applied to the cost of the trip.
